Garment workers in Bangladesh are paid the least in the world and are unable to buy food and arrange shelter on their monthly earnings, according to the International Trade Union Confederation, a Vienna-based labor rights group.
The official minimum wage has been set at 3,000 takas ($45) a month, up from 1662 takas ($25) in the first raise since 2006, Labor Minister Khandaker Mosharaff Hossain said.
International clothing companies Wal-Mart, Tesco, H&M, Zara, Carrefour, Gap, Metro, JCPenney, Marks & Spencer, Kohl's, Levi Strauss and Tommy Hilfiger all import in bulk from Bangladesh.
Just goes to show you the markup on just about all clothing products.
Also shows you that clothes made for the more expensive 'name' brands are made in the same factory as the cheap no-name brand stuff.

Between 2001 - 2004, we (ny'ers) used to have a few meats a year in and around nyc/LI area. Those were always fun and lots of "regulars" would show up.

so so true. I buy most of my stuff from sears... cheap, stylish (for the most part) and they get the job done. The only time i go to name brand stores is if i have a coupon and/or they have some crazy special going on. I think paying more than $30/jeans at the moment is ridiculous.
Tru Religion....$400 for jeans? W T F is the difference between those and the $30 Old Navy jeans. Both cover my legs.
Strictly baller status.
Typical garment (shirt, t-shirt, polos, jeans, shorts etc) is around $5-$10 a piece to produce in bulk. Then you add on the import quota cost + shipping (about a buck or 2). The rest is just mark ups.
Now once you factor in unsold stock (you'll always have something that nobody wants), theft (a shop owner I know that sells high end stuff loses about $30K of merchandise a month, mostly @ the warehouse) and season changes, you actually can justify the 100% mark up. But $400 for jeans are just for stupid people that watch way too much MTV Cribs and Jersey Shore.
sadly, my wife buys $200 jeans all the time but whatever...she doesn't buy thousand dollar bags so it's pretty much her only vice. I have simple taste in clothes..I only wear levi's and t shirts when i go out but I can't stop spending money on kicks.
