Default Sniper: Inside the Crosshairs (Grosshairs lol) on History channel

Talking about the longest sniper kills in history, including an interview with the Canadian sniper Rob Furlong with the worlds longest kill. SOOO tight.

Yes... hell of a shot.

BTW: You might want to change the thread title to "Cross" hairs...

It wasn't bad. I thought they put snipers on a higher pedestal than they deserve. Sure, they do amazing work, but I doubt they're the deadliest men on the battlefield. I think front line JTAC's would have something to say about that.

Note the man in the USAF uniform:

IDK if it was on the show, but snipers are a force multiplier, 3-4 2 man teams can hold or stall 1-2 dozen opposing soldiers. Also, they are able to put one shot and drop a force commander to paralyze the other side's command & control, where a thousand shots may just kill a bunch of grunts and trees.

Artillery has killed more people by far, but there's 3-4 guys per gun and a possibility of dropping a shell on friendly troops.

That, and lets be honest here... Snipers are just below ninjas on the threat scale.

Oh, snipers ARE ninjas, there's no doubt about that. Ever seen footage of air strikes and bombings and what not done by the USAF? Odds are a JTAC airman attached to an army infantry platoon calling it in. One or two men can wipe out a tank column with a phone call. They call A-10's, A-10's go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT, tanks are swiss cheese.

I'm willing to be one sniper team could hold down way more than 1-2 dozen soldiers in almost any situation if they are in the right position. The psychological impact of having an enemy sniper exploding your soldiers and not knowing his location is enough to send dozens, if not hundreds of men head for cover.

As for the JTAC....Sometimes it takes a while for air power to arrive, and if the enemy is too close to the good guys, it can't be used at all.

Its called danger close. And AH-64 Apaches. And snipers aren't always on hand, either.

ALSO, now that the military is starting to implement the boomerang sniper spotter system, they're not as big of a deal for us as they were in the past.

I suggest you read "Not a good day to die" on Operation Anaconda by Sean Naylor, that will give you a pretty good idea of the limitations of airpower and the importance of snipers. And lets not forget that shooting isn't necessarily even the primary mission of a sniper. In any case, the, the truth is any battle can be won with sufficient air power, and if we were arguing whether air power is more important than snipers then I would agree, but this is a comparison of JTACs vs Snipers.

I'm not doubting the effect snipers can have on the battlefield; my original point was that snipers aren't the only thing that can affect the battlefield so much with so few men.

I seem to remember seeing a few USMC/Canadian snipers halting a column of Iraqi tanks in Kuwait, no A-10's required. (Russian T-72 tanks have a soft spot at the turret collar, and Barret's love to dump shots in there...)

It should have been a moment of pride for the Canadian army. Five of its most talented snipers -- men trained to kill without remorse, then turn around and kill again -- did exactly that. They destroyed al-Qaeda firing positions, saved American lives and tallied a body count unmatched by any Canadian soldier of their generation. U.S. commanders who served alongside the snipers nominated all five for the coveted Bronze Star medal. "Thank God the Canadians were there," is how one American soldier put it.
Anyhow about Furlong... it's not a picture perfect end... Furlong quit the military and went to the Edmonton Police Force. The reason he left is pretty sad too...

In a nutshell: 5-man sniper unit, 2.4km kill and rest of the tangos are either captured or killed by other elements of the brigade.

Later on, a captured Afghani says someone in that unit k-barred a finger trophy for themselves which is by-and-large a war-crime (separate engagement). CAN-NIS (Criminal investigative service of the Canadian Military Police) investigates, everyone shuts up or blames the other guy.

Furlong is disgusted and leaves for better pay, less danger. Rest of the unit is either "given the golden finger" (ie, retire or courts-martial) or leaves after commitment is up. CAN-NIS still doesn't know what happened 5 years later.

That's the gist of it anyhow.

Furlong is with Edmonton Police last I read.

Yeah, this kind of thing happens on our side and its a travesty... The Jihadists behead people left and right, turn bodies into IEDs, etc. etc. its business as usual.

I don't agree with taking trophies, but when someone gets to that point they're manifesting PTSD heavily, they need help not prison.
