Honestly, I don't have a problem with it. Getting people to not use plastic bags is a good thing, but those things are a nightmare for the environment. And its not like they are charging an arm and a leg for the new bags.

Walmart is the biggest company that is leading the green way. They are doing quite a lot in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency.
What I don't like about this is that if you don't have your bags, then you will be forced to buy another bag to carry your stuff. I shop at the walmart by my job during lunch and I walk there from the office which is about 4 blocks. I don't keep spare walmart bags with me nor would I want to carry them around before I eat.
1. 20 years ago everyone was touting plastics so that we could save the trees... Now plastics are the devil.
2. 20 years ago, we were in a crisis because man was going to cause the earth to become an ice block... Now we are going to boil under man-made global warming.

I agree. Everywhere I shop now I ask for paper bags.

The global cooling thing 20 years ago was never very popular and did not have anywhere near as much science to back it up as global warming, nor buy in from a majority of scientists. However, 20 years represents a LOT in today's day and age.
That said, plastics are good. I don't think there are many people who would argue that plastics are bad (though the few who do will be given a microphone by the media, I'm sure). They are simply used way to widely, in everything from your shoes, to your coat, your car, your cell, and everything else in our daily life. The problem here is not the generation of plastics, it is the WASTE of plastics that is bad. I'm going to take a wild guess that you recycle at home. I could be wrong though. Most people feel we should conserve and not waste for wastes sake.
It is now mandatory for grocery stores to charge for bags in Ontario. I bought a couple of those canvas ones, but I still buy plastic bags on occasion, since I use them for various things as well. I will say, now that they are required to charge for the bags, grocery stores have really stepped up the quality of the bags they use. Metro here uses these guys that can hold about twice as much as before and are way stronger to boot (trying to give us our $0.05 worth, I guess).

Really? 20 years ago I remember my science teachers touting the idea that a reusable cotton cloth bag was a better idea than a plastic bag. Back then though, there was formaldehyde (sp?) in the formulations...
And, come to think of it, the Global Warming trend was being taught then, and we learned about conservation IIRC. Maybe 50 years ago there was a question as to whether or not there would be long-term cooling but I don't recall hearing about global cooling... I didn't go to school in the 70's though, maybe that was when you're thinking about?
The main things we learned about the environment was VOC's from aerosols/AC units and McDonalds' styrofoam containers that were poking holes in the Ozone layer, and a few things about de-forestation of the rain forests in SA and desertification in Asia and Africa and how that was related to crop failures and droughts.

Yeah, that's when the global cooling hype started (and ended). There were a couple articles in a couple of popular magazines (Science?). It was an interesting idea, so it got some of the media's attention, but didn't take much hold.

Yes, science is given more than short shrift, there's a definite division between church and state, I don't have to worry about religious nutjobs polluting the airwaves, and hockey is more popular and makes more sense than Catholicism.
Fuckin' awesome, eh?
Anyhow, that being said... I just keep a couple of bags in my car, and there are foldable bags that are small enough to put in a coat pocket. If there's a difference between 5 cents and getting a couple of the cloth/woven plastic bags, I'll deal with carrying them around. The only thing I use the plastic bags for anymore is garbage in my office/bathroom bins.

Wash those canvas bag. All these green cloth bags are dirty and health risk over time. Especially they are used to carry grocery.
