Edmunds is reporting (in a now removed article) that the hybrid concept being announced on Monday in Detroit will be a Scion iQ Hybrid. According to Edmunds' Inside Line, the iQ Hybrid will be released in a five-door hatchback and sedan body style. The hatchback will go on sale in the US first, sometime in 2011.
With a combination 1.5 liter engine and electric motor, the car will produce 100-120 horsepower total. That should lead to about a 60 MPG average. Price? Rumors peg it under $15,000.
Are they trying to compete with the Smart for smallest size?

Hybrid under $15,000? not bad. Still would never own a Hybrid though.

^ That's what I was thinking... That's a nice price point and would probably make financial sense to buy one and own it until the batteries need to be replaced.

For battery replacement, I'm wondering if the 1st gen. Honda Insight owners have had to start replacing them... Most hybrids use the same type of battery as the Insight, and according to the Wiki article on the Insight, the cost is about $2800 for all new battery and installation, but you can either recondition, or replace with a used sub-pack for about $300. No word on how much more mileage you'll get after the battery warranty (10 years/157,000 miles) expires.

How long before Exxon buys the patent and destroys it?
They don't need to any more.
Only 20% of Chinese can afford a car and they are already buying more cars than US. India is coming on board soon. Exxon is looking at double to triple business in just 10 years out.
Even without the west, there will be oil shortage.
