Yeah, depending on your area, you swtich from a winter gas formulation (slightly less refined, combusts a little easier so your engine will warm up a little faster) to a summer formulation that burns more completely so you have less airborn pollution. That's one reason for the increased cost.. the other is pretty simple, oil companies are netting BILLIONS of dollars (part of the reason I'm kinda happy I invested in them).Unless the Catalytic converter isn't all it's cracked up to be, I don't understand what the change-over is for.

They change over is all because some tree hugging hippies decided we needed to change formulations that net absolutely no benefit what so ever. The only thing summer gas does is it doesn't evaporate as readily as winter gas.
No one has answered this part of the equation - Winter gas is supposed to have a lower evaporation point so it works better in colder weather but you end up getting less gas mileage. So you have to burn more to go the same distance as summer fuel. How is this netting us any decrease in emissions?

Give it about a month and we'll be back to 4$ for unleaded. Only this time it'll be permanent.
