Default Student gets tasered for being an ass

Quote:
At Penn Hills High School this morning, Chief Burton said, a student was walking up and down a hallway, using a cell phone. School policy permits students to have cell phones but not to use them during school except in emergencies, Chief Burton said.

A Penn Hills police officer told him to put the phone away and go to class.

"The kid refused to listen," Chief Burton said. "The officer took him by the arm and said, 'You have to go to the office.' The student resisted, pushed the officer. The officer, defending himself, took out his stun gun and did a drive stun."

Chief Burton said a drive stun involves pushing the Taser against a portion of the body and squeezing the trigger, thus immobilizing a portion of the body, such as the leg. He said this affects about a 2- or 3-inch area.

While on the floor, the student was still resisting and was placed in handcuffs, Chief Burton said. The student complained of a headache and dizziness and was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital.
I changed the title of the article in the thread subject to more accurately described why the guy was tasered.

Since when is it OK to taser a student that is posing no threat to anyone?
My dad was a teacher for 36 years and he always said you can't lay a hand on a student unless it was to prevent them from harming someone else or themselves.
Someone is gonna get sued.

I still think the kid was being an ass BTW.

Once he went from a nuisance to assaulting a police officer, all bets are off.

The cops said the kid pushed first.
Unless there is video evidence, I don't believe either one.

In most cases I tend to believe the cops first.
But he tazed the kid right away after he was pushed.

The officer should have just taken out a ruler and beaten the kid.

The problem with these devices is that they are potentially deadly and were introduced and marketed as a non lethal tool that police can use instead of a shooting someone with a gun.

Since day one police have used them as a compliance enforcement device, often shocking victims multiple times, and with some people this can be deadly.

Classic case of such is outlined in this post.

Would you rather the officer use a soft-point hold and dislocate the kid's shoulder? Perhaps he should have choked the bitch out?

Simple point of fact: the kid had at least 3 chances to comply, and refused all of them. He got tazed because he assaulted the cop. He continued to resist... he wasn't about to comply. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't tolerate that shit from an adult, let alone a teen.

I don't like that Directed Energy Weapons are used and that they're used with alarming frequency, but lets look at the alternatives:
- Soft-point holds
- OC (Capsicum solution) spray.
- Other Chemical compliance devices (tear gas)
- Stun guns (not Tazers, tazers are lot better metered)
- Baton holds/baton strikes
- Firearm use.

Ultimately, we all want to see people obey a verbal command (or just follow the rules in place ultimately), but some people are just too willfull, too agitative, or just plain too stupid to follow directions: you have to force them to comply at some point and once the person escalates to violence against the officer, they're not going to comply willingly.

FUCK THEM if they can't figure that shit out for themselves.

Everything you're saying is just fine.
I'm just telling you that I have heard first hand of a teacher being sued because he physically removed a kid that was actively beating another kid.
The kid's parents that sued didn't care that their kid was sitting on top of another kid beating the crap out of him. All they cared about was the teacher used force to remove the kid and left marks on the kid's arms where he was grabbed to remove him.

Yes, that's something that cops have to deal with actively, as well... but in their case it's called police brutality.

Those types of suits are frivolous, and usually a teacher's union will back up a teacher on that, at least, in the few times I've seen a teacher physically separate 2 students that are fighting and that happens, the teacher's union tends to big-foot the competition.
