I wish you knew about weapons and existing laws so that we could have an intelligent conversation about "gun control".

There are countries where people are more armed then in USA and have less gun violence. They aren't as populated as USA though.

I heard he had multiple fully automatic weapons in his possession. People with money can always get what they want. Ask the drug cartels in places like Mexico where firearms are banned.

2: More people are intentionally killed with knives, blunt instruments and cars every year than with firearms. The worst mass murders in modern history was a car bomb in Oklahoma City and passenger airplanes. Should we start banning knives, blunt instruments, cars and planes?

3: Licenses for fully automatic weapons are hard to get. You have to be finger printed, fill out a ton of paperwork and pay the $400.00 fee then wait a few weeks to get the license. Of all of the licenses out there only one guy has done anything bad with his and you want to ban the gun. By your logic since Muslims have committed thousands of murders in the name of Allah, then you support Trumps travel ban and since thousands of illegals from south of the border have committed millions of crimes you must support the wall and immediate deportation of all illegals. Last time I checked you were opposed to the travel ban, deporting illegals and the wall. Hypocritical much?

source the subject was a whale? sounds like he had capital (owner of two small planes). otherwise, all I heard from news reports was he had recently moved to Nevada in a retirement community.

Anyone saw the interview of his brother? I really feel for his family. sounds like they were completely blindsided by his actions.

So people with money can not get anything they want? So only poor people get their firearms taken away but the rich get to keep theirs?

When have you ever complained about the knife, bat or car killings/ attacks in this country?

If firearms have to be controlled then illegals and Muslims' must be controlled as well since they commit crimes by your logic.

Umm France and Sweden just to name a couple in recent times have had mass shootings.

One of the guys on a radio station he listens to goes to Vegas and is a valued customer. He checked in with a few hotel people that he knows and they let him know that the guy is a whale and spends like a mother fucker. Either way small planes are not cheap and fully auto weapons are definitely not cheap. The dude had some cash.

He was shooting from over 400 yards away. The gunshots had a 1-2 second delay because of the distance so when he first started shooting and after every reload people were dropping before the initial shots were heard. Terrifying.......

He was also a multi-millionaire, owned a 400K house and two planes.

Man...There are some down right frightening vids and analyses coming down on the news feeds..

Shooter was perched with 2 windows broken open (they looked like they were spaced apart at seemingly slightly differnt angles), active for 1 hour and 12 minutes, from the first 911 call until he was finally down.

To be able to even begin to establish a security plan for this situation is impossible. Elevated shooter, huge ass hotel, you don't know which way to run...

Some absolutely fucked up shit has happened here.

Automatic weapons have one intent..........to kill intently, intensely, and with rapid speed. I cannot see why they are needed except by a military. Same for extended magazines....why do I need a clip that carries 50 bullets instead of 15 in my handgun? Why does a person need a machete?

That is my point. I see zero reason that such weapons should be available to civilians.

I think he shot himself long before his room was breached 72 minutes into the siege. I know how fucking heavy bulk ammo weighs so he likely had a limited amount of it in his room, and easily shot it all in maybe 5 minutes based on the 100+ rounds-per-minute rate of fire.

Once the police release the timeline of the attack, we'll know all of the details.

^weight doesn't matter, he could easily smuggle in an arsenal over the four days he was staying there. duffle bags and golf bags can carry a lot of shit and unfortunately, a mega hotel like this is kinda an ideal place to do this type of shit.

Within hours of the horrible attack in Las Vegas, before we knew most of the relevant facts about the tragedy, gun control advocates were calling for more gun control. Here is something I would like those advocates to consider: Europe, which has all the gun controls that are being pushed in the aftermath of the Las Vegas carnage, has actually suffered more bloodshed from these types of attacks than the U.S.

You heard that right: Countries such as France may have made all semi-automatic guns illegal, but that hasn’t stopped killers from getting fully automatic machine guns to use in mass shooting attacks. All four of the 2015 mass public shooting in France involved machine guns, including the 130 people killed in November of that year in multiple attacks including one at a concert venue.

In the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Europe saw machine gun attacks in airports and nightclubs by groups such as Black September and the Red Army Faction. In fact, machine guns are commonly used in mass shootings in the rest of the world.

This has not been the case here in the U.S. In fact, Sunday’s attack on a country music festival in Las Vegas – that left at least 58 people dead and more than 500 wounded – may be the first mass public shooting in the U.S. involving a machine gun, if it turns out the killer did use such a weapon. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, is believed to have used at least one fully automatic weapon – weapons that are heavily restricted under U.S. federal law.

It is an attack that is likely to rank 14th in the most deadly mass public shooting in the world since 1970. It is the worst ever in the United States, according to data collected by the Center for Crime Research where I am founder and president.

There were 29 such shootings (four or more fatalities in a public place, according to the FBI’s official definition) in the U.S. during the eight years of the Obama administration; 26 in Europe. The rate at which people are killed is virtually the same in the European Union as in the United States.

Again, many of the facts about what happened in Las Vegas remain unknown at the moment, including exactly what type of firearm the gunman used. But one sad fact that everyone calling for gun control needs to consider is that, as Europe has shown, you can have all the gun control laws you want and you still won’t be able to stop horrors like this from happening.

John R. Lott, Jr. is a columnist for FoxNews.com. He is an economist and was formerly chief economist at the United States Sentencing Commission. Lott is also a leading expert on guns and op-eds on that issue are done in conjunction with the Crime Prevention Research Center. He is the author of nine books including "More Guns, Less Crime." His latest book is "The War on Guns: Arming Yourself Against Gun Control Lies (August 1, 2016). Follow him on Twitter@johnrlottjr.
Gun control in Europe is almost total. It hasn't stopped mass shooting attacks like Las Vegas | Fox News

Nobody needs semi/automatic weapons, I have no clue what people fight that. If nothing changed after 1st graders were mowed down in Sandy Hook then nothing will ever change, GOP will hide their heads in the sand and send meaningless "prayers" while checks from NRA are falling out of their pocket.

@griff: so what is your solution to prevent carnage such as this and Sandy Hook? Mass shootings in the US has become far too common.

While you give examples where you claim stricter restrictions does not work. An example where gun reform laws has worked (so far) is Australia.

And you seem to conveniently overlook countries where strong gun control laws do work. Looking at you, Japan and Great Britain.
