Default Backfire

Is it bad for an sr20det to backfire? It's not happening often quite rare and while changing down gears and rolling.
Would it just be running rich possibly?

Could be running rich, could have a bad cat converter or o2 sensor, but either way it sounds like it's not burning up all the fuel in the chamber. Do you have a straight pipe? My car used to pop a few flames out the back when I was running one.

The pipe only has one bend. It's only when it's slowing down rolling in between down gear changes.

It's more on low revs than anything. ... I've seen smoke on one or two occasions .

Might even have a hole somewhere in the exhaust, have you checked for one?
The low revs and smoke make me think so.
