Default HTPC's

Just wondering who here has one and wondering what your setup is.

I basically built a server that I have networked in the house. It houses 9TB's and my collection includes about 3,000 movies ranging from SD quality (480p) to HD quality (720p) and I also have a large collection of TV shows.

I use XBMC with the Aeon skin as my software of choice.

^ nice setup! My HTPC is far more basic, but it gets the job done and i LOVE it!

i went with a cheapo acer win7 box (similar to: Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AX1301-U1302 Athlon II X2 215(2.7GHz) 4GB DDR2 750GB NVIDIA GeForce 9200 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit ). I absolutely love it. Low maintenance, runs just fine for what i need and allows me to do a lot on it. Some of it's duties are: Central point for music, internet radio, TV (hulu, MS internet tv, streaming movies, etc), Internet browsing from the couch, SNES roms (mariokart ftw), porn on a 42" screen, and some other things...

What mouse/controller are you going to use with yours? I have this and i LOVE it: Gyration Air Mouse

How do you backup 9TB's of data? Do you rely on raid alone as your 'safety' ?

I updated the first post with a pic of my setup.

As you can see I have a 42" LCD monitor on top of dual 22" monitors. I have my HTPC and then my personal PC both under the desk. The HTPC is only really used as a server. I have XBMC installed on my personal PC and have the drives from the HTPC networked.

My HTPC remote is a Snapstream Media Firefly. I use EventGhost to configure it and being it's an RF remote I can pretty much use it from anywhere in the house. When I need to use the internet, I just sit at my desk.

As far as backup, I don't really have anything in place right now. A RAID setup would require me to get even more drives to just keep everything backed up. I have a buddy that has an almost identical setup with pretty much all the same movies I have, so if one of my drives every dies I can just backup from his stuff. Besides, I bought all Western Digital Green drives and have them set to only turn on when they're in use so they're not always spinning. The only one I have always on is the main drive that runs the OS and is where I download all the torrents and seed off of.

I forgot to mention that for audio I have the Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified 5.1 Surround Sound System and it sounds amazing!

you have bigger balls than i do to not have any sort of backup or raid5 for 9TB of data! Where do you store your htpc server? Any photos of the machine?

I don't have much for audio (a cheap 2.1 system). Living in an apartment pretty much kills any sort of nice audio setup for me. I miss my old 5.1 10" sub setup

I really wish remote power was more mainstream. I would LOVE to add the ability to turn on/off/set timers on each outlet/device in my place through my HTPC. One day...

I've been looking into something like this but I'm cheap and can't afford another computer. I actually have a mobo and case laying around but not a 2nd hard drive big enough to store the info. I have my main PC with the video/audio on it as my "media drive" housing only media. With my recent purchase, a macbook pro, I've been slowly researching a solution so that i can pull up my media, whether it's a video or music file on both. So far I have just made a copy of my media and loaded onto the HD of my macbook because I'm syncing my phone with that now rather than my desktop.

If I could pick up a cheap HD with a decent storage volume (currently only 1TB which is plenty for me, so far) I wonder what it would take to get that computer running as a media server that is compatible with my main PC, macbook, and even my xbox.

Is it possible to store my audio on the media server and have my itunes pointing to to that server as the storage are for more than 1 computer at a time? That way if I add files to from my PC my mac would update as well? This would be clutch since I torrent n my pc and use my macbook on the go or when I'm not in my room.

I've got a 2 speaker bose setup. Ran me $100 or so from Best Buy a year or 2 ago. Absolutely love them. I live in an apartment myself and the bass isn't crazy but there is plenty there from the small speakers.

If you get a Windows 7 machine and use Windows media center, you can access shared drives on it to play audio/video files form other machines. Not sure about accessing a mac, but i'm sure there are ways... I'm not familiar with itunes either.

Check newegg.com for cheap hdd's. Plenty in the 1TB range these days for under $100.

What is your budget for building the htpc?

Although my HTPC was low budget build as well, i absolutely love it and going forward will always have one. I, personally, do not need cable tv or any sort of music media (cd's, mp3 player in the living room, etc) anymore. I love having it in one customizable box that is centrally located in the living room.

my budget right now is $0. I'm getting a few of my past investments paid off before starting new ones, big or small.
