Default I did the KYB AGX Rear shock install today

I been wanting to do this for along time. Finally just bought a pair of the 94-96 300ZX rear KYB AGX adjustable shocks Part #741028 I got them for $97.00ea shipped off ebay. I looked around and this was the lowest price I could find shipped.

Pretty easy install just a couple of things you got to do to make them fit. Knock off the spring perch which is just pressed on. The piston shaft is alittle wider at the bottom to put the OEM spacer with rubber bushing on. So you need to grind that down slightly. You got to widen the bottom saddle bracket. Widening it is not hard, but then its flared out and you got to square it back. What I did is found a couple of sockets that fit between the stock shocks bracket and placed them between the new flared out bracket then hammered it so the sides squared back, but didn't close more then the 2 socket space that was the same space on the OEM shocks. Can you picture that.. lol I should of took some pictures, was going to, but once I started on it it didn't take long. You will also need 2-7/16x3" long bolts with washers and lock washer and nuts.

Now for the ride.. I put them on the highest setting#8. I have read from others that it is very stiff and they are right. It is so stiff that its bouncy! I don't mind it myself I wanted it stiff to keep my body from rubbing my tires on big dips when driving fast on the freeway. The corning is tight! I like it. No body roll very firm feel.. it really tested my tires! I might could set them at #7. Will try that later, but for now I will drive with them on #8

hmmm... I didn't know those would fit in the rear. I already have the KYB replacements all the way around on my car, but I might upgrade to these.

Having the rear stiff would definitely help me out at the track. Got any pics of the install?

Oh yeah this has been done for along time.. back in 04 this mod has been done.
After driving around now I will say that its not bouncy like I said before, but very firm. You feel every bump and dips on the road. The shock compresses easily just its rebound is very stiff at least on the #8 setting. It feels more jerky feel then bouncy if that makes any sense.

I also did this mod about 4 years ago.
I usually keep the dial set at 5 or 6 but when I have a really big load in the trunk (like luggage for a trip) I set them to 8 to keep the back end from bottoming out.

Easy mod to do and it does make a huge improvement over the stock shocks.

I actually have a set of modded adjustable fronts to put on I just haven't gotten around to it - for over 3 years now.

I guess I've been too busy with the family and working on other people's cars.
I've also had stainless brake lines for the last two years that I haven't installed yet.

vq, which seller did you purchase them from? I'm going to message him if they have any more since I can't find them on ebay now? I read the write up on Active Tunings site and it looks like something I want/need to do

i finally did this on monday, along with GR2 front struts. not too hard to do. bugged vq5speed with an email (couple weeks ago), because i was afraid to use the whole shock as leverage when bending the saddle bracket. thanks for the response, curtis!

sorry, sassan, i didn't do a write up either.

just wanted to help clarify the part that needed to be grinded down. there is a slight ridge that does not let the shock mount sleeve sit all the way down where it needs to be. i used a dremel with a sanding drum and that worked great. also, i used the original mounting bolts with M12x1.25 locknuts, instead of replacing the bolts. either way works just as well. the locknuts were tricky to find locally, so might be faster to use new bolts, like vq5speed did, if you don't want to hunt around for the locknuts. the reason you need the nuts is because the OEM shocks have a nut welded to one side of the saddle bracket, but the AGXs don't.

I've had my rears for about 60K miles so I might look into getting another set.
If I crawl under there and find any leaks at all, I'll buy a new set and do a write up with pics of the whole process.
I'll get under the car this weekend and check out my rears.

On the plus side, I did finally install those stainless brake lines and I even managed to install my HID 3K fog lights.

When removing old shocks, do not go crazy and remove back seat or hat shelf. There is no need to access top nut. It is welded to the body, meaning you just need to twist shock until it falls into your hand.
